Touted as a Quantum leap in insulation, a new nanotechnology from US-based company Aspen Aerogels set to revolutionise Australian transport industries, has arrived in Australia.
Up to eight times more efficient than traditional insulation, Aerogels Australia's Spaceloft is a clean, green insulation nanotechnology which each year saves global industry millions of dollars in installation and operational costs while saving the environment from millions of tonnes of carbon emissions
First developed in 1931, Aerogel is more than 90% air, making it a highly effective insulator with the lowest thermal conductivity of any solid.
US-based company Aspen Aerogels has since advanced the material into extremely strong, flexible and light weight products which can be fit to a huge variety of applications and have gained recognition as the world’s best insulators.
Aerogels Australia's Director Simeon Caric says Spaceloft is a major leap forward in insulation not only because of its superior performance and environmental profile, but because it has such a wide range of insulation applications from buildings ,HVAC,composite panels, retractable linings to shoes & much more.....
“Being extremely thin and flexible, Spaceloft Aerogels allow for retrofitting of existing infrastructure and cover a temperature range from -270°C to 650°C," Caric says.
“It’s also very long lasting with a life of 50 years, and it’s 100% recyclable with very low embodied carbon. This adds up to sizeable energy cost savings across a number of platforms, which is not only good for business but good for the environment.”
According to Dr Martin Belusko from the Sustainable Energy Centre at the University of South Australia Aspen Aerogels has twice the insulating performance of polystyrene and outperforms the leading polyurethanes insulation products.
A key disadvantage of existing insulation is that it significantly degrades with time or water ingress. Spaceloft Aerogels do not degrade with age and are not damaged by water”.
About Aerogels Australia

'Aerogels Australia are the affiliated Australasian distribution company to Aspen Aerogels in the United States, the developers of the insulation technology. Our primary role is to establish downstream links for the mass application of aerogel insulation, through the provision of information and services to third parties to deliver & achieve low life cycle energy buildings in Australia’. .
Aerogels Australia’s insulation has the unique characteristics of the having the lowest thermal conductivity of any insulator on the market, has an exceptional resistance to water degradation and aging, and as a consequence represents a quantum leap in insulation technology. Having a low embodied energy, the technology also has the lowest life cycle energy of any insulation product. We recognise that Australia is undergoing a significant change in the building industry in response to the issues of global warming, and wish to contribute to that change'
